The Basic Steps of Speeding Up Your Website

IMAGES:

1) Figure out exactly how big your images are going to be on your page, and export an optimized (60%) jpg at that exact size. Not only will they load faster, but they will also appear sharper and cleaner as well.

2) Use HTML text instead of image text whenever possible. I know its easy to use nice rollover buttons, but they just make your site longer to load and are not necessary. Look into using CSS to make your rollovers with 'a:hover'. CSS is easy to use and easy to learn and you can make really nice effects using it. A text based link to faster to load and the text is picked up by the search engines, unlike an image.

FLASH:

Alot of people will tell you not to use flash on your site because it bogs it down, causing long load times and uninterested viewers.. This is true in many cases, but it doesnt have to be. Properly planned and designed flash animation or applications can be a joy to navigate and view. Animation can be sped up in a variety of ways, however careful planning and extensive knowledge of the platform is required.

MUSIC:

1) Instead of using one long song, try to think in predetermined loop lengths that are interchangeable. Using short loops can save alot of wasted bandwidth, unless the viewer is watching a video or listening to the music for a particular purpose, it is unlikely that they will stay on your page for the full duration of the song.

2) Start with as high of quality MP3 or WAV file as possible, and import that into Flash. Use Flash's internal compression software to find the right mix between file saze and quality. Importing a low quality sound and then exporting it will cause a double compression resulting in lower quality at higher file sizes.
