Improving your search engine ranking with key design changes |
Search engine rankings are derived from two main areas:
Part 1) SEO techniques employed on your site.
Part 2) The number of quality incoming links to your site.
PART 1) Important SEO techniques:
A) Search for the most popular keywords related to your products/services offered. If you have multiple products on your site with multiple pages, research the keywords for each individual page/product and apply the following techniques for each page with the keywords specific to that page.
Use this free tool to research keywords:

Also search for competitors and companies/individuals in similar fields to see what keywords they are using.
B) Your URL (domain name): include most important keyword or keyphrase. Underscores and dashes are fine.
eg. www.sexy-swim-wear.com
Usually a domain name that is marketable(short and memorable) does not do much for your search engine rankings, but since you already have a domain name, I wouldnt worry to much about this... and dont try to submit multiple domain names leading to the same website with the same content... you will be penalized.
C) Page filenames: Always include your most important keyword for each page in the filename itself.
eg. www.sexy-swim-wear.com/string-bikinis.htm
D) Page titles: Again, a descriptive, keyword dense page title is very important. Feel free to repeat the most important keyword a couple times. Your page title is what appears in the first line of your search result. Page titles should be unique for each page and contain the keywords that relate to the page content.
eg. Sexy string bikinis and swimsuit bikinis for all sizes.
E) Page description: (meta tag) Your page description is what appears in the second/third line of search results. Load it up with your keywords (dont repeat same word more than 3 times), but keep it in sentence form so that it is readable by humans.
eg. Wide selection of string bikinis and sexy suimsuits available. Shop online for bikinis and swimsuits and choose from many colours and styles with shipping across Canada.
F) Page keywords: (meta tag) Although not as important these days, its still good to list your keywords and keyword phrases here. try not not repeat the same keyword more than 3-4 times.
eg. string bikinis, bikinis, swimsuits, swim bikinis, sexy swimsuits
G) Page copy/content: Most search engines (at least the big ones) will look at all of the above (titles, url, description) and try to match that with the actual content on your page. So make sure everything matches up well and you will be considered more relative to a specific search term. This includes naming your images appropriately and adding <ALT> tags to your images with the appropriate keywords.
H) Search engines love new, updated content, so be sure to add to your site on a regular basis. Consider having a section where you write a weekly newsletter or articles based on your products and services, make them fresh and unique, and dont forget to load these up with your keywords. This will also benefit you for part 2.
